There’s something so unexpected about a glossy berry lip.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always found berry lipstick to be a little intimidating. Compared to red, pink and neutral, berry has always seemed so attention grabbing (weird right?). But not anymore. Now I can’t wait to rock a berry lip this summer after seeing the gorgeous winner of Australia’s Next Top Model, Montana Cox, pouting up at me from this months Harpers Bazaar.
According to Bella Sugar the makeup artist behind Montana’s look used Chanel products. Pricey. So for this tutorial I’ll be finding cheaper, but no less fabulous, products to list alongside the Chanel. Because I’m nice, and you deserve to look fabulous!
Step 1: Get your base sorted.
You must, must prime your skin before attempting this look. I can’t emphasise enough how important it is that your skin is moisturised. I like: Face of Australia Primer $11.95 at Priceline.
Now for your foundation. For this look Montana wears Chanel Perfection Lumiere Fluid Foundation $86 which is just the most amazing foundation. If you can afford it, I highly recommend it. Whatever base you decide on, try to use one that will give you flawless coverage. A tinted moisturiser will do the job marvellously but if you want more coverage opt for a foundation. I recommend: Napoleon Perdis China Doll Foundation $55, Hissyfit Anti-Aging Foundation with SPF30 $39.95
Finally, apply some highlighting powder over the top of your base. Montana wears Chanel Lumiere Sculptee Highlighting Powder $90, but any highlighting powder will do the job nicely. I like: Nars Highlighting Blush Powder in ‘Albatross’ $49
Step 2: Bronze up those cheeks.
Bronze skin is key to keeping this look summery and seductive. Being too pale could very easily turn this look into a more vampy, potentially gothic look, so let’s embrace the bronzer. Montana wears Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel Moisturising Bronzing Powder in Terre Epice $79 but again, pick whatever bronzer you love and feel comfortable with. Powder, liquid, gel, whatever. Apply your bronzer wherever the sun would naturally hit to give you a summer glow. Pay extra attention around your cheeks to build definition. I like: Rimmel Natural Bronzer $12.95 at Priceline.
Step 3: Let’s talk about the eyes.
Montana’s eyes are easy to recreate. To create the wide awake, natural lash look the makeup artist used Ombre Essentielle in Beige Lamé $44 (which is a mid-beige with sparkle), and Sublime de Chanel Mascara in Deep Black, $52. I personally would use a champagne shadow, nice and easy, and it suits everybody. Also feel free to apply some bronzer on the upper eye-lids if you like, I feel like this adds definition.
Tip: ensure to apply shadow in the inner ‘v’ of your eyes to make them pop!
As for the mascara, any black mascara will do, but I would advise you to lay off the volumising formula’s as we’re after a natural look.
Step 4: And now for the main attraction, the lips.
Montana’s gorgeous berry pout is Chanel’s Rouge Allure Extrait de Gloss in Triomphal $50. It’s such a gorgeous lipgloss that I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it. I love a luxury lippy. But the ultimate key to this look is for the colour to be bold and glossy. To keep with the cover look I like: SAX Rich Lip Colour Lipstick in ‘Berry Delight’ $14.95, Dior Addict Lipstick in ‘Perfecto’ $45, NYX Very Berry Lipstick $4.99.

Products I used: (FACE) Garnier BB Cream in 'Light,' Covergirl Olay Concealer, NP Set 'Romance' Palette Highlighter Powder, Rimmel Sunless Bronzer in 'Bronze,' Rimmel Matte Pressed Powder in 'Translucent.' (Eyes) NP Set Eyeshadow Palette in 'Chicago' using the lightest shade, Covergirl Lash Blast mascara in Black. (Lips) SAX Rich Lip Colour Lipstick in 'Berry Delight.' Too easy huh?
Apologies for looking washed out, I assure you in real life I was looking beautifully bronzed. The lighting and Photo Booth combined always wash me out! Unfortunately my eyeshadow doesn’t show here, I really must find somewhere with better lighting for taking photo’s.
But anyway, the point I’m trying to make: look how easy it is! I did this in under 10 minutes so no excuse for you not to try it as well!
Note: I used my Garnier BB Cream for a dewy look. If you have some flaws and want to cover them up, by all means wear a foundation that gives you more coverage. Also, the SAX lipstick is amazing. It’s a new favourite, and has a glossy finish though you can’t see it in the photo. If you want a more higher voltage, glossy look I would apply a similarly toned gloss on top.
And you’re done! This is actually quite a simple look to achieve, and I for one, know that I’ll be rocking it this weekend! Who’s with me?

I love berry colours but i just can’t be bothered with the maintenance that goes with it! I did end up buying Number 11 of Kate Moss’ lipsticks which isn’t quite red but not quite berry which i’m dying to wear because it is divine!
Montana looks absolutely stunning!
I hear you about maintenance, but I think berry is still much easier than a red lip. No11 sounds great!
Hi Emma,
I was after your opinion on Garnier’s BB cream. I have quite a similar skintone to you (quite pale) and I’ve heard some review say that the “light” can be too organe for pale skin and can be difficult to blend.
What are your thoughts?
Hi Monica! I quite like the Garnier BB cream (I have it in ‘light’) and don’t find it orangey. It’s actually quite good in that it’s brown toned so I get a slight tint of tan which brightens up my face (and I need it!) It isn’t an oil free product so it can be a bit shiny, but I use translucent powder on top and that settles it down so it stays looking fresh, but not shiny, all day long. As far as blending goes, I just smooth it on with my fingers and that works a treat.
However, from reading around on Primped, some people have found that it didn’t quite ‘match’ their skin or they didn’t like it, it seems to be a product that gets mixed reviews. But at $11 I tried it out and it worked for me so I’m very happy!
If you’re looking for a tinted moisturiser and don’t spend more, brands like Hissy Fit, Laura Mercier and Clinique do great ones. And at least with them you can try before you buy! Goodluck xo
Thanks Emma. To be honest I just wanted to try it because it’s new! (I’m sure you understand). I’ll have to try to exercise some self-restraint and stick with what I’ve already got. x
I definitely understand, I’m a sucker for any new product!
Hi Emma,
I’m really enjoying your blog, but I do have one note. You are using apostrophes for plurals (formula’s etc) when you should only use them for possessives and contractions. It’s just been nibbling me as I read and you said you want your blog to be 100% perfect. Other than that, love your work!
Thank you for the feedback! It’s such a bad habit of mine I don’t notice I do it anymore, but genuinely thank you for bringing it to my attention.
